Iwayaguchi Buoy art

This installation has been continually built upon, using washed-up buoys that Okuno started collecting in the 1960s. The buoys are not only from within Japan but from places like the Korean Peninsula and Panama.

Eijiro Okuno

Born on January 18, 1931. After serving as an apprentice to a carpenter in the Kitatanoura region of Sado, Okuno set up an independent practice, and is still honing his craft after 60 years as a carpenter. For the past 50 years, Okuno has been collecting buoys washed ashore—a collection that now amasses nearly 600.
